In a perfect world, all dentistry would be preventative. Most major dental problems can be avoided with a proper at-home dental care routine and regular visits to the dentist.
We see patients of all ages and offer comprehensive services to screen for dental decay, periodontal disease and oral cancer.
Patients often comment that a visit to Dr. Cranham is unlike any other dental visit they've ever had. Here's what you can expect when you visit our Chesapeake VA dental office:
In addition to routine care and preventive services, we provide a menu of restorative procedures including root canals, dental fillings, orthodontics, the treatment of gum disease, and dental crowns just to name a few. We also offer cosmetic dentistry services to further enhance your smile.
Tooth or mouth pain may signal a cavity. When plaque forms on teeth, the acids can cause deterioration and decay. Dr. Cranham practices mercury-free dentistry and uses tooth-colored porcelain and composite resin fillings to repair decay and restore dental health.
Dr. Cranham uses dental crowns for a number of reasons: resotre teeth after root canal, correct chewing problems, repair damaged/worn teeth and anchor bridgework. Having Bayview Dental Laboratory in the same building with us will allow you to meet the dental technician who will be fabricating your restorations. This customized, team approach to restorative dentistry will provide you with a dental experience second to none!
A bridge is a dental device that contains one or more prosthetic teeth to fill gaps and complete your smile. Dental bridges are permanently attached to healthy neighboring teeth that have been prepared with crowns. If the teeth that border the gap aren’t healthy enough to crown, Dr. Cranham may suggest dental implants as an alternative.
Dental implants are a secure, natural-looking option to replace missing teeth. Many patients prefer implants to other prosthetics because they look and feel like natural teeth. Dental implants restore dental structure to make faces appear fuller and more youthful. They also prevent bone deterioration caused by missing teeth.
Dentistry is important at every age and stage of life. Dr. Cranham and Dr. Myers see children starting at age 3. Our staff is very familiar with the needs of children and work to make them feel as comfortable as possible. Preventive care and conservative treatments are the main focus of our children’s dentistry program.
A typical child’s visit with Dr. Cranham may involve:
Part of the children’s dental appointment includes special time for instruction to teach children and parents good habits for hygiene and daily care. We ask about diet, check swallowing and speech patterns. We offer white fillings for children who need them. And orthodontic consultations for teens.
Sirona Galileoes (CBCT) - Dr. Cranham is one of the few dentists in the Mid-Atlantic region to utilize state-of-the-art cone beam computerized tomography in his practice. Cone beam computerized tomography, or CBCT, is a digital, three-dimensional x-ray that allows Dr. Cranham to look at all surfaces of your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). CBCT is a critical step in the assessment of a patient’s oral health, particularly in regard to the diagnosis of TMJ disorder.
All patients benefit from CBCT. With this advanced technology, Dr. Cranham can identify hidden problems and underlying causes for dental health issues. Regular dental x-rays allow Dr. Cranham to identify changes in the occlusion, bone or other support structures and look for signs of oral cancer.
We’ll take pictures of your smile during your exam and following treatment to document your amazing transformation. If you want a glimpse of your new smile prior to beginning treatment, we’ll use our digital imaging software to create a high-resolution picture that shows the proposed effects of specific therapies. These images are valuable educational and treatment planning tools.
Chairside CAD CAM (Computerized Assisted Design) Dentistry is revolutionizing how we practice. We are proud to be the first practice in the Mid-Atlantic Region to utilize the The E4D solution. What is Cad Cam Dentistry? It essentially allows us to do Crowns, inlays and onlays in our office, without a dental laboratory in about an hour.
The Waterlase MD Turbo is a state of the art dental laser which allows us to prepare teeth for many cavity preparations. This eliminates the dreaded sound of the drill, and in many cases eliminates the need for anesthesia! We are tremendously excited about adding this technology to our practice.
The Waterlase is also used to treat advanced cases of gum disease that traditionally required painful, invasive therapy. The laser provides a conservative treatment that gently disinfects and eradicates diseased tissue to stop destruction and let gums heal. Laser dentistry is fast, efficient, and safe. Bleeding is minimal, recovery time is quicker, and in many cases there’s no need for stitches.
VELscope® is a hand held device used to examine the mouth and tongue which uses blue-spectrum light to highlight irregular tissue that the naked eye may not notice. Not a replacement for the traditional mouth and neck exam used to detect oral cancers, this technology enhances the exam and enables Dr. Cranham to provide more accurate diagnosis when tissue is damaged by disease.
"Dr. Cranham and his team are amazing! I have had years of challenges with TMJ and Dr. Cranham has found innovative treatments to correct my bite and my smile. Dr. Cranham is caring and gentle, which is important to me, as I have been a nervous dental patient. His knowledge and experience are impressive and I love recommending him to my clients who are new to Hampton Roads. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Cranham and Staff!"
"I came to Dr. Cranham's office unhappy with the over all look of my front teeth. I wanted them whiter and wanted the edges to be more uniform and to close spaces, at the gumline, that were left after having braces. After an examination and a consultation, we determined the best course of treatment for me would be a combination of bleaching some teeth and doing veneers on others. This enabled us to be very conservative but also give me the look I wanted . I am so thankful to my dental team for giving me the smile I envisioned."
"I am typically not an easygoing patient; however, my experience with Dr. Cranham and his staff continues to be nothing short of excellent. I am constantly reminded of my satisfaction with their work by a steady stream of compliments from both friends and strangers."
"Dr. Cranham gave me the smile I always knew I had inside. Due to medical issues as a young child, my permanent teeth did not have the whiteness I wanted. In almost every family and school picture I took, I wouldn’t show my teeth. Dr. Cranham changed my life and gave me the confidence to greet the world with a smile."
"I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Cranham. He listens carefully to what you want and your concerns and shows you what he thinks would be good for you. He has the most up-to-date equipment and an office staff second to none. He does beautiful work, and thanks to him, I don’t have to be self conscious about my smile anymore."
