Snoring is a common sign of a sleep disorder that may also be affecting your overall health. While sleep disorders can affect anyone, patients who are overweight or obese are more likely to suffer with sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea.
Chesapeake, VA dentist Dr. John Cranham works with patients to identify sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, a potentially life threatening health concern. OSA is characterized by repetitive cessation of breathing which is resolved with a loud snore. Patients with OSA are at increased risk for other health problems, including a higher risk for stroke and heart attack.
Signs and symptoms of sleep apnea:
- feeling groggy and/or fatigued throughout the day
- dry throat in the morning
Dr. Cranham offers oral appliance therapy for patients who snore or have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder, including obstructive sleep apnea. Although the CPAP is considered the gold standard for treating OSA, patient compliance is typically low because it is somewhat uncomfortable to wear and prohibits eating and speaking while in place.
Oral appliance therapy can often be just as effective and maintains a higher compliance rate due to the ease of use. Making lifestyle changes can also improve symptoms- and reduce associated health risks. Losing weight and reducing tobacco and/or alcohol use are common recommendations that can dramatically improve both symptoms and overall health!
If you or someone in your family suffers with snoring or any of the symptoms mentioned above, schedule a consultation with Dr. Cranham in his Chesapeake dentist office.
