Missing teeth can impact almost every aspect of your life. With an incomplete smile, your self-confidence will definitely be affected but so will your oral health. Missing teeth can lead to secondary oral health complications which is why it’s so important to replace them as soon as you can.
The primary options for replacing missing teeth are: dental bridges, dental implants and dentures. Each type of treatment has its own advantages. Dr. John Cranham is one of the leading dentists in Chesapeake, Virginia for restorative and cosmetic dentistry. He will work with each patient individually to determine which treatment is best for them.
Dr. Cranham will thoroughly evaluate your oral health condition and understand your overall health and aesthetic goals before recommending the most suitable option.
Dr. Cranham offers a dental bridge, an affordable treatment option for patients who are replacing missing teeth. A dental bridge is a custom fabricated dental restoration designed to “bridge” a gap between teeth.
They can be used to replace a single missing tooth or several consecutive missing teeth. The bridge can be either removable (flipper teeth) or fixed. A fixed bridge is anchored either with dental crowns and/or dental implants.
Dental implants are a more permanent solution for missing teeth. They are made up of 3 parts: a titanium post, an abutment and a dental restoration. The post is surgically implanted into the jaw bone and actually replaces the root of the tooth, becoming fully integrated with the bone.
Then an abutment is attached to the implant. That piece with hold the replacement teeth. If you are missing a single tooth, a dental crown will serve as the replacement tooth. Dr. Cranham will use a dental bridge if you are missing several consecutive teeth and a denture if you are missing an entire row of teeth.
Dental implants are generally the most expensive replacement option, but they also require the least maintenance. Not all patients qualify for dental implants. The location of the missing tooth as well as the overall health of the patient and bone structure will be evaluated before the dentist recommends treatment.
Dr. Cranham is the Clinical Director for the Dawson Academy, demonstrating his commitment to staying on the leading edge of modern cosmetic and restorative dentistry. In many cases, Dr. Cranham can complete the entire procedure in his Chesapeake dentist office. For other cases, he may work with a local specialist to complete the surgical phase of treatment and carry out the implant restoration in his office.
A denture is a custom made set of artificial teeth used to replace missing teeth and some of the gum tissue when a person is missing all of their upper or lower teeth. They are made in a dental lab with impressions of your mouth. The denture can either be removable or secured using dental implants.
Removable dentures take some time to get used to and require a lot of extra care. Implant secured dentures, also known as “All on Four” or “Teeth in a Day” offer improved stability, comfort and permit a healthier diet.
